Lecture - Biotechnology: Benefits and Challenges to Hawaii Farmers. Dr. Yun Judy Zhu, Ph.D. In this presentation, both potential benefits and concerns of recent advances in biotechnology as well as the roles of different federal regulatory agencies will be addressed. Dr. Yun Judy Zhu is a Research Scientist at Hawaii Agriculture Research Center (HARC) working on tropical crop improvement through molecular cloning and genetic engineering. This event is part of the 2008 Community Forum in Chemistry co-sponsored by ACS-Hawaii Section and WCC.

Film and Post-Film Discussion Wave Power: The Potential of Oregon's Ocean Energy is a film directed by Oregon Sea Grant which explores the new technology breakthroughs in converting the natural power of waves to a usable energy source. It compares some of the techniques for harnessing ocean currents and vertical waves. Also included is a discusson by Hawaii scientists who are currently exploring this new fuel source. Niho Oki Workshop - Olohe Kahakauila Toledo

Learn how to make a Niho Oki, the traditional Hawaiian utility knife with a shark tooth, used to strip outer bark from wauke or mamaki. This multipurpose tool can also be used to expose inner bark for making kapa, and to carve patterns on the i`e kuku (kapa beater). Other uses include shaving hair, carving wood, and cutting food.
