STEMworks PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

An innovative, relevant approach to STEM education

Unlike any other class in Hawaii’s middle and high school curriculum, STEMworks is a multi-faceted, hands-on program where students get to use the most current, high-end technologies in actual service learning projects.  This is more than an after-school science club. And it’s much more than an enhanced “computer class”. As STEMworks teams work on current community issues, the process teaches them to:
• Acquire and analyze information • Tackle locally-based issues and provide solutions • Apply the latest high tech solutions.

Becoming better thinkers

Students join a STEMworks Lab not only to learn the latest science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) technologies, they also get to work with local industry partners to apply their skills to specific issues, gaining the satisfaction of knowing their efforts are contributing toward improving life on their respective islands.  Once a STEMworks team identifies an existing problem/opportunity, each is tasked with creating a project design to customize and test their solution. During the process, they learn how to develop an industry partner relationship, provide an actual deliverable,
and maintain an ongoing solution for the future. Ultimately, the goal for students is to become better strategic thinkers who can draw on technology to tackle unpredictable, real life concerns.

Learning to use cool tools

In tackling a range of challenges, STEMworks students have the chance to develop relevant 21st century skills in:  Animation • Computer-aided design (CAD)
• Engineering design • Visualization • Database design • Webpage design • Programming • Office automation • Global Positioning Systems (GPS) • Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

STEMworks CURRICULUM INTRODUCTION

We live in exciting times. Hawaii is home to a multicultural society rich in diverse cultural traditions and brimming with talent. The first inhabitants of these shores experienced the beauty and potential of these islands centuries ago, adapting to their environment by creating a place-based science that nurtured the opportunities they found and met the challenges they encountered. Today is no different. Modern Hawaii is intimately connected to a world seeking to nurture opportunities and meet challenges that face our “island planet” -renewable energy, clean water, sustainable agriculture, and equitable economic development. The fate of our island home and our planet requires keeping faith with the wisdom of our ancestors while applying this wisdom to ever more complex and difficult problems.

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) are all forms of wisdom based on our ongoing human experience. The knowledge and skills derived from these disciplines will be the source of innovative solutions to humanity’s quality of life. But just as ancient values and wisdom cannot survive without being passed on to future generations, the cumulative wisdom of the STEM disciplines cannot be brought to bear on modern challenges without new scientists, engineers, technicians, and mathematicians. STEMworks is dedicated to encouraging Hawaii’s students to explore careers in STEM fields through hands-on, community based service projects that are rooted in the STEM disciplines.

To be human is to be in relationship to others. Human beings accomplish great things when they learn to...

Project Examples

STEMworks students are encouraged to discover what they are passionate about in their communities. As the students become immersed in the STEMworks program, they are tasked with identifying a problem/opportunity in the community, creating a project design to address the issue, testing their solution, developing a partner relationship, actual delivery, and maintaining the partnership. The following are some of the projects that were developed throughout the state of Hawaii.

Internships

Providing a creative and stimulating STEMworks environment for our Hawaii STEMworks students is an important link to developing the next generation of Hawaii STEM professionals. Much effort is placed on connecting the dots between the STEMworks curriculum, software tools available in the classroom, and the real world connection and actual application. The summer of 2011, STEMworks students from across the state will be given the opportunity to participate in summer internships in STEM fields. Existing partnerships with Industry partners will allow our STEMworks students to work on a real world project utilizing the tools and knowledge gained will participating in the STEMworks program.
