NSF International Research Experiences for Students (2009)

IRES – 2009 Summer Study in Germany: Riverbank Filtration Systems

The International Research Experience for Students (IRES) Program, sponsored by NSF has funded the University of Hawaii to send 4 US students for summer research study at the University of Applied Sciences at Dresden, Germany.

The Hawaii IRES program is directed by Dr. Chittaranjan Ray, professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and co-directed by Dr. Thomas Grischek, professor at the University of Applied Sciences in Dresden.

Participants are doing field research, site visits, as well as group and independent study on various aspects of riverbank filtration systems and how models are used to manage them; optimization of riverbank filtration systems, and how such systems are used by water utilities to remove common pollutants found in rivers.

This group will follow and interact with the German students as they pursue various research experiences in the course of their 8-week sojourn. Students will post journal entries, research experiences, and photo and video documentation, and invite feedback from other SIP members. The portal will also link to a website.
