Lyon Arboretum Niho Oki Workshop from SIP Hawaii on Vimeo.
The Lyon Arboretum at the University of Hawaii, Manoa is fortunate to have among its resources several Native Hawaiian practitioners of traditional arts and science. The Native Hawaiian Methods and Implements group provides an opportunity for sharing of information, follow-up and discussion pertaining to various Native Hawaiian Methods workshops presented as part of the Lyon Arboretum Education Program. Participation in this group is open to all interested individuals.
The niho oki was used for many varied tasks, including shaving hair, cutting food, carving kapa beaters and stripping bark.
Please use these pages to describe your own personal use of the niho oki or other uses that you have observed. Did you take any measures to adapt the tool for more effective implementation?
