DNA Connection

Standard: 7.5.2-Heredity-Describe how an inherited trait can be determined by one or more genes which are found on chromosomes

Standard 7.5.3-Heredity-Explain that small differences between parents and offspring could produce descendants that look very different from their ancestors.

1. Assign cornell notes including DNA information as regular note taking from the textbook.  Students should develop questions after reading the pages and write it in the 1/3 column of their paper. The answers and notes to each question would be written on the same line on the other 2/3 of the column on the right side. A line should be skipped between each question.

2.  Distribute and review "The DNA Connection" summary reading and questions. Discuss and explain concept of protein synthesis.

3.  Show protein synthesis and DNA genetic videos at www.discoveryed.com and www.learn.genetics.utah.edu.

4.Distribute "What is your DNA Alias? handout and explain how a specfic genetic code is attached to different proteins.

5. Explain and play "Condo BIngo" using a bingo sheet, answer key and a standard codon table. Provide simple reward system and make sure students use proper names of protein after they translated the messenger RNA.

6. Distribute other handouts "DNA-TheDouble Helix" and have students complete by coloring the messenger RNA with related questions.( Follow up with lab using lanyards and colored beads activity if time is available.)

7. Show and explain the model of DNA helix.
