At King Intermediate, teachers have integrated several water quality and environmental studies labs and lessons into the science curriculum. The slide set and lesson plans included in this share-ware page were presented by Lorie Javier at the February 2010 RET Sustainability Workshop, and highlight some of the water quality and environmental studies activities conducted at the school.
This lesson is designed to introduce students to environmental science, and provide an understanding of where bacteria live and how healthy the environment is around the school. The lesson will focus on presence of Escherichia coli, which is used by many agencies as a strong indicator of the healthiness of an environment.
This unit reinforces concepts in the Earth Science textbook about tsunamis. It asks students to model and test a tsunami to determine how a tsunami will affect water quality and organisms' survival based on changes to water quality. This unit also builds on a brief introduction to water quality.
This lesson is designed to introduce students to water quality parameters as a way of understanding aquatic ecology. Essential concepts include understanding that organisms (to include humans) and their environment are interconnected and are impacted by one another.
