
Research Experience for Teachers (RET) - Middle School is a collaborative effort between the University of Hawaii and teachers in public schools across Hawaii. RET is a teacher driven initiative, and in response to participant request, will present several workshops to provide impetus for teachers to share and collaborate on STEM projects. The inaugural workshop of this series, PDA Workshop for RET Middle Schools, was held on Saturday, September 19, 2009 at the Manoa Innovation Center in Honolulu. The second workshop of this series, Robotics Workshop for RET Middle Schools, was held on Friday, December 4, 2009 at the Manoa Innovation Center in Honolulu.
Interested SIP members are invited to join in the third workshop of the series on Saturday, February 20, 2010 from 7:30 am to 1:30 pm at the Honolulu Community College, Building2, Room 201 in Honolulu, featuring presentations and discussions about local and global sustainability issues and environmental project for schools.
In the first session Dr. Kenneth Kaneshiro will discuss "Sustainability science and STEM education" followed by Dr. Chittaranjan Ray presenting his work on "Material flow analysis for a sustainable Oahu". This will be followed by Associate Professor Maxine Burkett giving a presentation on "Preparing our islands for a challenging climate". The session will wrap up with a presentation by Dr. Adam Asquith on "Renewable energy and biochar carbon sequestration".
The next sessions will be devoted to presentations on current programs at several Hawaii middle schools, including: Kawananakoa, Mililani, King Intermediate, Dole and Washington.
