Research Experience for Teachers (RET) - Middle School is a collaborative effort between the University of Hawaii and teachers in public schools across Hawaii. RET is a teacher driven initiative, and in response to participant request, will present several workshops to provide impetus for teachers to share and collaborate on STEM projects. The inaugural workshop of this series, PDA Workshop for RET Middle Schools, was held on Saturday, September 19, 2009 at the Manoa Innovation Center in Honolulu.
Interested SIP members are invited to join in the second workshop of the series on Friday, December 4, 2009 from 7:30 am to 1:00 pm at the Manoa Innovation Center in Honolulu, featuring presentations and discussions about using robotics in STEM classrooms.
In the first session, UHM researcher Dr. Peter Berkelman and Queen's Medical Center robotics surgeon Dr. Harry Yoshino will present current research and applications of medical robotics. Spectrum Photonics engineer Jason Akagi will cover some of the many aspects of robotics that are used in real-world engineering applications: sensors, actuators, computer vision, autonomous software, control algorithms, etc. Some potential classroom ideas and specific student skill sets will also be discussed. The session will wrap up with a panel session to discuss the many good tools that can be utilized for introducing young students to the field of robotics since using robotics in an academic curriculum builds a great foundation for students interested in engineering & sciences.
The second session will be devoted to presentations on current robotics programs at several Hawaii middle schools, including: Jarret, Mililani, Moanalua, and Highlands.
This group provides an opportunity to meet and exchange ideas with technical experts as well as peers who are new to robotics, or already have experience with robotics in the classroom, and ways they can enhance STEM learning.
