PDA Workshop for RET Middle Schools - 09/19/2009

Research Experience for Teachers (RET) - Middle School is a collaborative effort between the University of Hawaii and teachers in public schools across Hawaii.  RET is a teacher driven initiative, and in response to participant request, will present several workshops to provide impetus for teachers to share and collaborate on STEM projects.  The inaugural workshop of this series was held Saturday, September 19, 2009 from 8:00 to 12:30 at the Manoa Innovation Center in Honolulu.

Interested SIP members are invited to join in the 2009-10 RET season kickoff featuring a hands-on workshop about using PDAs in  STEM classroom and field activities. On September 19, a support team including Teacher Facilitator Judy Inouye, UHM engineer Ashish Babbar and a group of educators and technical specialists presented an overview of wireless technology and applications, including a how-to demonstration of the PDA and its many applications. The majority of the workshop was devoted to hands-on activities where participants could practice using the devices and see examples of ways they have been integrated in middle school curriculum. In a lively Q & A, teachers from different schools discovered that they share many technical and curriculum challenges.
